Can isolation make you stronger?

“The most terrifying and important test for a human being is to be in absolute isolation.” Vasily Solkin.

I have this reoccurring dream. I am walking through the city and the streets are abandoned. The cars are littered across the road. I look over and there is glass everywhere from all the windows being smashed. I walk inside an empty grocery aisle, a white noise is coming from a small alarm-radio clock and then abruptly I wake up.

What does this mean?

Consider being the last person alive?

Yes, people have written books about it, movies have been done around this subject as well. I want you to just stay with me and follow the message I want to convey.

What would it be like to be the last person alive?

We are social creatures, we thrive because we depend on one another. You can be independent like me, but think about the other people that depend on you, they need you.

So let’s examine four different dispositions: The self, the other, the environment, the law.

The Law;

How would one govern himself?

Follow these 6 steps to make an impact in your community.

Why give?

A friend of mine had a great job, but then got laid off due to unforeseen reasons for the company closing down. This outcome resulted in his breakup with his girlfriend of whom they support 3 children. Those children are left in my friends care because the girlfriend is unstable in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

No job, 3 children, and an eviction notice from his landlord. How would you react to this situation?

Do you know anyone who has been in a dire situation where someone needed support from their local community?

We continually hear about starving children in Africa who go days without food and water. We hear about natural disasters that happen all around the world that affect hundreds of thousands of people.

Yet, these stories about the micro causes in our own backyards are the ones we can visually see an impact in when we give a helping hand. How can we support these micro causes? By gathering the people in your community and following the steps I will lay out for you.

To give all you need are actionable steps that will guide you through the daunting task. You don’t need any money, all you need is your heart, your time, your determination, and a network of friends.

If you are on social you probably have a hundred friends, or maybe just 5 really good friends. Well, guess what those 5 friends have 5 really good friends too. Leverage this by impacting the people closest to you so they feel compelled to share with the people who are closest to them. Create a ripple effect.

When you have someone who wants to give back as bad as you do you will create an impact larger then by doing it alone.

Let me take you through 6 steps on how to make an impact in your community.

Step 1:

Find a micro cause that you would like to see an impact in. Ask the family if they are okay with receiving support.

To see a list of ideas for events you can google ‘charity event’s’ in your area if you want to be boring, or better yet come up with your own. What do you love to do? Biking? Setup a local group bike ride. How about a BBQ, or boating?

We will get to step two in a minute, first you need to come up with the idea, find a family that truly could use the support or you can even do it for your local charity organization.
Speak to the coordinator of your local charity and get the exact details of what you can and cannot do to support them. They do have rules and guidelines. Through good intentions you will be able to win them over. Before you pitch your idea to them, really think about it.

Why age shouldn’t influence our conception of advice.

I wake up and rush to the washroom. I relieve myself and then head back to bed. As I lay in bed my mind begins to race. Ideas are flooding in my mind. Now I can’t get back to sleep. What is my day looking like? What is the most important thing I have to do? How will I do it? What are my goals? I got a great post I want to write. I start laying the foundation of the post in my head.

It’s true, you can only retain one thought at a time. Stay focused on one idea at any given time. Another great Idea arises. Now I lose track of the first post I wanted to write about. I get annoyed because what I thought was a great idea is lost in the vast array of my reflections.

I begin to think about how early it is and that I can get another hour of sleep because everything else can wait. As my tired self dazes off and begins to lose consciousness, I think about that too and that’s when I prompt myself out of bed.

Now I am here. My screen blurring at me, it’s 4:30 am. This isn’t part of my routine.

What has provoked me to break my habit? Was it the fact that I didn’t want to lose my train of thought as I lay out what I think will be a good topic to write on? Is it the fact that I want to get lot’s done and the best way to get the most done in a day is by waking up early before all my peers and the chaos?

I was watching a you tube clip a week ago of Gary Vaynerchuk interviewing Eric Thomas. Eric Thomas was asked by one of his friends “why is he up so early?”. I had the same reaction as Gary. The person asking obviously is not a ‘winning player’.

The topic that broke my usual routine of waking up, reading, going for a jog, having a cold shower is on advice. I have written about it in the past so I will give you new content that is not a reiteration of what I have already told you.

What is advice?

One person’s wisdom to another. A recollection of information. You learn something at point A and transfer it to point B. Really think about it, advice is nothing more then information that you have learned and that you end up conveying somewhere else, that’s it.

Why does a person’s age influence the type of advice their given or are giving?

Most times I have a really difficult time giving advice to someone who I know is older than I am.

How will they perceive me when I give them advice? Am I worried that they will judge me?

But it really sounds like they could use it.

That is the type of thinking that happens in my mind before I contemplate whether I should or shouldn’t give advice to my older peers. Most times I end up going with the latter.

I don’t want to sound egotistical, I don’t want to sound like I know it all. I don’t. But am I doing a disservice of holding back on giving the advice that could potentially be useful?

This is why the internet and the information that is circulated there is so powerful. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what your nationality is, or if you’re a male or female. The internet is ubiquitous. The information that is often given holds merit on it’s actual value.

Does the information you are given produce results? If so, why does ....
